The city of Raneth is the only permanent settlement of any appreciable size that can be attributed to the Alaghi race. When pressured by the armies of the Ilban Empire, the Alaghi banded hundreds of families and tribes together in mutual defense, and their fortifications became the beginning of the city of Raneth. Currently the population is quite mixed – Alaghi are the largest racial group, but half-Alaghi, humans, and halflings are abundant, and some dwarves and elves are present as well. There are even a few goblins, ogres, and gnolls, those who are willing to accept the order of society. The government is a council of representative by district to create laws and take executive action, and are backed by military-run courts.
Raneth is a trade center for lumber and ore, and are an important source of raw materials for the region, and for Dhiles. The Alaghi nature is well-suited to hard work and they tend to make tireless laborers who don’t mind mindless work, so long as they get enough spare time to worship and socialize.
Raneth maintains a standing army and navy, unlike many city-states in Moontree, and despite the lack of major conflicts for many years. The navy builds enormous galleons, some of which have steel-plated hulls, which are ponderous and slow, but very powerful. The army is often employed as peace-keepers, to overpower the strong subculture of gang activity present in the city.
Raneth also has a culture of courtesans that most view as an outgrowth of the Alaghi custom of males bringing gifts and services to females in exchange for a chance to breed. The most well-known courtesans, human or alaghi, command great respect (not to mention outlandish fees), and are at the forefront of the city’s cultural trends.
